Is Tom Brady going bald?

Amid reports of Tom Brady going bald, it is customary to review the issue of male pattern baldness, also known as androgenic alopecia.  Most men will suffer some form of hair loss during their lifetime.  The question is what can be done about it?  There are several questions that need to be answered before you can determine exactly what approach to take to reduce or eliminate any balding or hair thinning.

1. Determine the source of the balding.  Is it hereditary?  Most hair loss is inherited.  Look at your mom and dad and see what type of hair loss they have. Chances are that you will follow the same pattern.  Women hair loss can also follow the pattern of males.

2. If the cause of the hair loss isn't hereditary, then evaluate your current health condition to determine other causes.  There are several illnesses and prescription drugs that cause hair loss. If you cure the illness and/or stop taking the medication, the hair loss will usually stop.

3. Visit a medical doctor to consider all the options available in the medical community for hair loss prevention and cures.

Hair Loss in Women

Hair loss can be more devastating for women than men. Women are just expected to have hair. Addressing hair loss in women at an early stage can help to slow down and possible eliminate the thinning that occurs.
There are several steps to take in this process.

1. Determine the type of  hair loss. Did you just start losing hair? Are you losing a lot of it quickly, or is it a more gradual occurence that is happening over months?

2. Evaluate the source of the hair loss. Do you have underlying medical conditions that might be causing the hair loss? A typical medical condition that results in hair loss is thyroid disease. Schedule a checkup with your medical doctor so that you can rule out medical conditions.

3. Begin a treatment plan for your hair loss. If you do have an underlying medical condition, your doctor may prescribe prescription medications as part of the treatment. Once the medical condition has been dealt with, your hair loss problem may go away on its own.

4. Stay on top of long term treatment. Once you have stopped or slowed down your hair loss, don't start relaxing. It is very important to stay on top of your problem. Evaluate your situation every few months to see if the hair loss is getting worse or better. Adjustment in your treatment may need to change over time.

Hair Loss, Thinning Shampoos

Hair loss can hit you at any time.  There are many causes for hair thinning, the main one being age. It is very common to start losing your hair as you get older. However, if you are experiencing very drastic hair loss or thinning at any time, it could be from other factors, such as health issues or maybe prescription medications.

It is always a good idea to visit your medical doctor if you suspect that you might have issues that can be treated.

One of the first places that you can start as far as hair thinning and loss are concerned is to buy a shampoo that is formulated for hair loss or thinning situations.  These types of shampoos will be much more gentle on your hair and may help to reduce the amount of thinning that you experience.

Women Hair Loss

Hair loss in women can be devastating
Hair loss is bad period. But it is considerably more traumatic for women. Women are accustomed to having hair. They don't go around shaving off their hair for no reason (unless they have a movie role or something). It is not considered attractive for women to have thinning or no hair.

There are many causes and conditions for women's hair loss that can be addressed or at least slowed down. Genetic factors, such as a family history of male pattern baldness, can cause a women to lose hair at an early age. Preventative measures include nutritional supplements and various products, creams and systems for slowing down the hair loss cycle.

Ongoing research in hair loss may result in a definitive cure at some point in the future. Until then, women need to be proactive about their hair loss and address it as soon as it begins.  See more details and solutions for hair loss in women

Top Hair Loss Myth

There are many myths surrounding hair loss that I'm not quite sure where they came from. One very common myth is that baldness always comes from the mother's side of the family. It used to be that you could look at your mothers father hair and find out what your hair will be like when you get older.  The truth is that baldness can be passed down from the mothers or father's side and it may or may not skip generations.

Male pattern baldness is a very common denominator among men today. More and more women are now experiencing the same hair loss as men.

There are certain treatments and preventative measures that can be taken to slow down hair loss or thinning. The FDA has approved some treatments for use to combat hair loss. Ongoing research in hair loss is constantly revealing new findings about what causes hair loss and possible treatments.  See more hair loss info.

What is a hair transplant?

There are many hair loss products and treatments available today.  Hair transplant is a very popular one because it tends to be more permanent and has immediate results.

So, what exactly is a transplant?  A surgeon (must be a medical doctor) takes pieces of hair and skin in areas of the head where you have hair and transplants those hairs/skin to areas where you don't have hair or have thinning hair.

Since the hair being transplanted is not affected by hair loss or thinning, it should not experience any hair loss in its new location.  There can be follow up treatments with products and prescription medication to make sure that the newly transplanted hair stays intact.

Hair transplants can be quite costly.  They are usually done on an out-patient basis and typically take anywhere from 4-10 hours depending on the amount of hair being transplanted.

Should you consider hair loss product reviews?

There are so many different types of hair loss products out there.  The information can be overloading at times. So, what is the best way to evaluate a hair loss product and decide if it will work for you?

Many websites have before and after photos of customers that have used their products.  It is possible to fabricate photos and with the help of photoshop, even make them appear very positive when it comes to hair growth. Relying on photos alone to decide on a hair loss product is probably not a good decision.

Another evaluation to use is customer testimonials. The problem is that this can also be fabricated. If you do a search online for 'reviews' of 'hair loss products' you will be able to find so many different comments on the same product.  Typically none of these reviews are verified- meaning that anyone can be posting them- even people that have never used the product.

In short the best, most objective criteria that you can look at when it comes to hair loss products companies is how long the company has been in business, how long their website has been online and the company reports with the Better Business Bureau and Angies List.  These are all very objective terms that cannot be falsified or tampered with. The longer a company has been in business, then the better the chances of the products being legitimate.

Selecting a Hair Loss Treatment Product, Solution

There are so many different types of hair loss treatments, products and solutions available today.  Sifting through the details of each treatment can be a little overwhelming. There are some key components of any hair loss treatment that will be important to consider.

1. Price.  If you cannot afford the treatment, then everything else about it is irrelevant since you can't buy it. If you find a product or treatment that looks promising, but it is out of your price range, then you may want to consider setting up a savings plan to order the treatment as some point in the future.

2. Success rate.  How many people have ordered and used the treatment or product and seen results?  The higher the success rate, the better your chances of seeing results as well.

3. Ingredients. There are very few hair loss treatments, products that are FDA approved. Check the key ingredients in the product and read details about that ingredient. Who wants to eliminate hair loss and create 10 other health issues at the same time. You want a hair loss product that is effective, but not with too many side effects.

4. BBB rating. Check out any hair loss company with Better Business Bureau.  You can see how many complaints have been filed against the company and also get detailed info about how long the company has been in business, etc.

Eat the right foods and reduce hair loss

Hair loss can be linked to nutrition and deficiencies.  Eating a balanced diet with all essential nutrients can help to eliminate or reduce some hair loss. Guest author below lists some foods you should add to your diet to help with hair loss or thinning issues.

Top 5 Superfoods For Hair Growth
By T. D. Crawford

Hair growth is dependent on the quality of our nutrition. Our bloodstream nourishes hair follicles, so the quality of the nutrients in our blood affects the quality of our hair. What are the best foods to create healthy, luscious hair?

1.    Salmon and fatty fish-Think of the fish oils and omegas in these guys as an internal conditioner. Not only is it excellent for your brain and your blood vessels, it produces stunning results for your skin and hair. Eat salmon or fatty fish at least twice a week in order to reap the benefits.
2.    Lean beef-As much as beef gets a bad reputation as an artery clogger and fat distributor, your body needs protein in order to produce quality hair. Lean beef is a great way to give your body the protein it needs. Indulge your inner carnivore once or twice a week.
3.    Dried beans-Dried beans are one of nature's miracles, believe it or not! Not only do they count as a vegetable AND a protein, they fill you up with fiber and are packed full of minerals. In my opinion, eat as many beans as possible and you will lose weight, look incredible, and feel fantastic. Beans can be added to salads, casseroles, and side dishes or made into patties and used in place of hamburgers. Beans can also be pureed into dips and spreads. This low-fat, low-calorie source of vegetarian protein is also an excellent source of iron, which is necessary in preventing hair loss. As an added enticement, they're ridiculously cheap-awesome for any budget.
4.    Eggs-"The incredible edible egg" as the ads say. Once again, this is a source of protein, but eggs are also rich in B vitamins, which promote healthy skin and muscles. Cell growth is also dependent on B vitamins.
5.    Nuts and unprocessed grains-These are another excellent way to add fiber (great for weight loss, digestion, and peak immune system function) and increase your general health. Specifically for hair growth, nuts provide protein, vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats that we need to look our best.

I'm often amazed and dismayed at the amount of money spent on products that are meant to improve our hair from the outside. How many of them work? Hair care is a billion dollar industry, and you won't know you've lost your money on a hair treatment until it's too late. Improving your body from the inside is the best possible method for improving the appearance of your hair, and it's likely that hair won't be the only part of your body that improves!

Possible Causes of Hair Loss

Natural aging brings hair loss and loss of skin tone. If the rate of hair shedding far exceeds the rate of re-growth there can be unnatural hair loss. Known causes of hair loss include heredity, medical conditions, stress, over-styling, chemical treatments and medications.

Some types of skin tone loss can be treated successfully. According to Lisa Ginn at SkinSight.com, "Excess melanin can cause visibly uneven areas of darker skin, a condition called hyperpigmentation. Conversely, other areas may lose melanin, resulting in pale or white spots, a condition called hypopigmentation."

Hair Loss from Medical Conditions

Many medical conditions and prescription medications are known to cause hair loss. Prescription medications that treat gout, arthritis, depression, heart problems, high blood pressure and birth control pills can cause hair loss in some men and women. Medical conditions such as lupus, diabetes, thyroid disease, autoimmune disease and chemotherapy treatment are also known as possible hair loss causes.

Once the disease is treated, the hair loss generally subsides and the hair will resume a normal growth cycle.

Hereditary Hair Loss

According to MayoClinic.com, a history of androgenetic alopecia (hereditary male pattern baldness) on either side of your family increases your risk of balding. Heredity factors also affects the age at which you begin to lose hair and the developmental speed, pattern and extent of your baldness.

Hereditary hair loss can affect both men and women, despite the name 'male' pattern baldness. Treatments are available to slow down the progress of the hair loss, but not eliminate it.

More Causes of Hair Loss

Many people that experience hair loss have been under severe emotional or physical stress, have had excessive or rapid weight loss from extreme dieting or experienced metabolic disturbances to their body. Once these conditions disappear, a normal hair growth pattern should return.

Additional causes include the hormonal changes after childbirth and excessive hairstyling or chemical treatments. Some women pull their hair back too tightly or even pull at their hair causing hair loss.

Reducing Hair Loss after Shampooing

Have you ever noticed the amount of hair that you lose when you shampoo? I know I have noticed. I blow dry and flat iron my hair after shampooing and the brush is always full of hair, not to mention the sink.

Well, I have discovered a little trick that seems to reduce the amount of hair I lose each time I shampoo. When I first get in the shower I completely soak my hair and rinse out all the hair products that I always put on. Next I grab some conditioner (Yes- conditioner) and put it all over my hair and then rinse out.

After applying the conditioner first, then I shampoo and condition again per usual. Adding the initial conditioner before shampooing seems to really cut down on the amount of hair I am losing.
Maybe you should try it out and see if it works for you. Oh, and an added bonus is that my hair is extra soft and more manageable when I do this.

Your hair is falling out - What do you do?

Every morning you wake up there is more hair on your pillow. When you shower, there are tons of hairs all over the drain. What should you do?

The first and primary issue to address is what is the source of your hair loss. Are you going through a stressful time, maybe taking some prescription drugs for some other medical issue? Did you just have a baby, or does male pattern baldness run in your family?

These are questions that can really pin down the source of your hair loss. A simple solution would be that you only have a vitamin deficiency and the solution is to take a supplement every day. A more complex problem could be a history of male pattern baldness. This issue can require more aggressive treatment.

In short, you first need to calm down and review your lifestyle and all the facts surrounding your hair loss before you rush out and start buying hair loss products. If the hair loss products don't address the source of your hair loss, then you will be wasting your money.

The best place to start is by making an appointment at a trichologist - hair doctor- to start figuring out how your hair loss started.
